about

The electric guitar is an instrument remade and remodeled in width, backwards, lengthways and across. So what's the point of releasing an album that consists of improvisations on electric guitar?

Well, one of the reasons is "music as a language". And, as such, my language is definitely "broken English". I think that with these 11 improvisations, I wanted to compose a dictionary of my "broken English" for 2023. You can then draw from such a dictionary to write books. Books are more albums. These will probably appear, using the language included in my latest dictionary. However, I have slowed down significantly, so you will have to wait a bit.

Another reason? Well, I remember how, after abandoning the psych rock project with Mateusz Nowicki, I hid in my studio in 2004 and wondered about my future path. The answer turned out to be an electric guitar prepared with various (then quite primitive) computer effects. These were the beginnings of my project Die Rote Erde, where, for some time (up to 2016/17), the electric guitar was the primary, if not the only, means of expression. So, almost 20 years after founding Die Rote Erde, I wanted to return to my guitar roots.

And finally, the third reason - I recently recorded an album with Jeff Gburek - an album where I play guitar, bass and organ. Improvised album. A guitar album because Jeff is a virtuoso of this instrument. It was a certain catalyst - what if you "undressed" the instrumentalist and put him "naked" on the stage, in the recording studio, or in the room. What will remain in his hands? Will he be an instrumentalist? An improviser? A composer? Poet? Experimenter? A visionary? Loser? I don't know the answers to these questions, but the music should not be pretentious. In my new solo album, I tried to show the "naked me" with the guitar, the one who spent hours, days and weeks with the instrument in 2004, recording the first songs of Die Rote Erde.

There is also a fourth reason - Johannes von Wrochem, an artist from Berlin who deals with free improvisation. The son of my first mentor. Johannes is also a guitar virtuoso, and perhaps my album is an attempt to establish a thread of communication across time, roots, and distance. Berlin may not be far away, but people can be separated by light-years, and it's all the result of life, experience, and failures.

To sum up, I wanted to record an unpretentious guitar album. As strict as possible. As real as possible. Honest, improvised, poor, weak, derivative. Just like all of us. Sometimes it's worth stopping and looking back, and then maybe a beam of visionary thinking will come to us for a second. Maybe it was worth it. I hope you will buy this album.
